Van Dijk Admits Team Faces Crisis, Challenges Players on Responsibility

The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of the club's disappointing title defence, confessing the reigning champions are in disarray and letting down head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is owning up for the team’s slump.

Van Dijk could not contain his frustration after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. “Unacceptable” Start and Set-Piece Woes

Van Dijk labeled Liverpool’s opening after halftime as “not good enough” and admitted “panic kicked in” as soon as Murillo gave Sean Dyche’s team the advantage. The first goal was the ninth goal Liverpool have conceded from a set piece in the current campaign.

“There was a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are dealing with facts and the facts are we conceded a set piece in the first half and a poor concession at the beginning after the break,” stated the defender. “As a team, we're certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and tempting to point fingers but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and claimed the title and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a tough time you must remain united and avoid blaming others.

“You have to be a man and face the toughness and go again, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s tiring but there is only one path forward.”

Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the European competition. Van Dijk said: “The next game is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I'll return and try to think how we can turn this around and I trust that is what everyone is doing as well.”
