Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Uninterrupted Crude Oil Supplies to India in Defiance of American Pressure

During a clear statement to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “unbroken” shipments of energy resources to India. The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and declared their partnership were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

A Statement For the United States

Putin's comments, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have tried to pressure New Delhi into reducing its close relations with Moscow. The backdrop comes after earlier American measures, notably the imposition of import duties against Indian goods because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a reliable supplier of fuel and everything necessary for the growth of India’s industry,” he said. “We are ready to keep guaranteeing the steady flow of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without naming energy directly, supported the theme by stating that “a stable energy base has been a key and crucial foundation of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging American Pressure

In the lead-up to the talks, during a media interview, Putin had questioned American pressure regarding India's oil imports. Putin stated, “Should America is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India enjoy the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival was his maiden journey to India since the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a clear show to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Personal Greeting

In a notable gesture, Modi welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders shared a warm hug as close allies before holding a one-on-one meal on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “based on mutual respect and strong faith.”

Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

The meeting produced multiple important deals in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to restructure their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia is still India's biggest exporter of arms, the volume has diminished lately as India aims to diversify its procurement.

Their communique stressed an agreement on the joint production of sophisticated weapons platforms, although direct mention of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, Russia and India reiterated that amid the “current complex, strained, and volatile geopolitical situation, their relationship stay resilient to outside forces.”
