The state AG has launched a fresh online portal asking citizens to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This step follows a day after a significant ICE raid disrupted NYC's Chinatown, sparking mass protests.
A US congressman revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in the city on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to share that evidence with my office. We are committed to assessing these reports and evaluating any wrongdoings."
The platform provides spaces to upload images and video footage of the raid, plus a section to specify location information. Before submitting, individuals must check a box that confirms that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a court case or public report."
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved more than 50 federal agents, happened in a famous district of NYC where fake products and additional items are regularly available widely – often to sightseers.
Videos of Tuesday's raid reveal multiple masked and armed federal agents securing and holding a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the city streets.
During a news conference featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the citizens were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the armed forces to prevent violence that they have created."
Fury over the federal action rapidly grew – every political contenders denounced the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate stated.
The city's immigrant rights groups spoke out too.
"Federal officers descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on street vendors working to survive. This operation had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE policy bans the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it will not take into custody US citizens. However, external research has discovered that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the present government.
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country this year.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are widespread as are accusations of violence and abusive practices.
Most recently, a letter filed by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
