Meteorologists are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the Met Office.

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, making additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
