Micky van de Ven Double Ends Everton's Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
