Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their release of a contentious video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The video footage, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in military or defense capacities.

"Like us, you all took an oath to safeguard and support this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reply

The recorded statement reportedly provoke a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a joint declaration denouncing the statements.

"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our United States with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a statement.

"We are former service members and national security professionals who love this nation and made an vow to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."

Further Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is historic in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and decide all that."

Administration Reaction

During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the official said. "There are sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
