Figures from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a appalling and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
