China Accuses America of ‘Double Standards’ Regarding Trade Levy Warning

Trump’s newest warning to introduce an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been labeled a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry additionally remarked that the nation could introduce its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the US President executes his threat, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade conflict.

This past Friday, Trump retaliated at China’s decision to tighten its policies for exports of rare earths, charging China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

He also vowed to pull out of a scheduled summit with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a summit in the Republic of Korea before the month ends.

His statements on that day unsettled stock exchanges, with the benchmark US stock index falling by nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since last spring.

His comments renewed apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the two sides had reached an agreement to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.

As a result, American import duties on products from China subject to an added import tax compared with the year’s onset, while US goods entering the country incur a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Ministry of Commerce in the manner of formal replies to journalist’s questions – reflected rhetoric from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while supporting Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on key elements as “normal actions” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.

Their representative said that for “many years”, the America had “broadened the definition” of domestic safety, abused foreign shipment regulations and “adopted unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Using” import duty warnings is not the proper method to interact with China,” the spokesperson commented.

“China’s position on a trade conflict has consistently been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China revealed it was tightening export controls on key elements and further resources vital for advanced tech manufacturing.

The action was viewed as a key move, as the nation refines about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are used in items such as solar panels and mobile phones.

New remarks from Washington and Beijing are being seen by observers as a method of strengthening positions ahead of future trade talks.
