A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after allegedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of damaging property.
Officials commented at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage showed a individual putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.
The accused did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was ill, as reported by news outlets, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.
A day after the alleged incident, the local mayor stated that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be removed without damaging the art piece.
“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”
The mayor added the council would seek the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.
When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its price tag and design.
Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
